Descansos
Many years ago when travelling in southern Mexico, I first noticed the tiny roadside shrines devoted to people who had passed away there (usually from car accidents). Called "descansos" in Spanish, they are usually left and sometimes maintained by friends and family to show their love and remembrance in a tangible way. Though slightly controversial in the U.S., the practice has now spread across much of the southwest. Whenever I see one, I'm drawn to take a moment with it and photograph it if possible. While some are permanent or semi-permanent, some can disappear within a matter of weeks or months. I find them incredibly beautiful, and they always give me pause to be thankful for all that life gives, and not take it for granted. Enjoy what remains.
